The
Family Vision Care (FVC) centre located in Kingsway Garden Mall
was renamed to VisionMed in 2001. It expanded to a 10,000 square
foot facility to include laser vision correction procedures. VisionMed,
a 100% owned subsidiary of FVC, is proud to be Canada's first "total
eye care" facility - offering all the latest in vision correction
options from glasses to contact lenses to laser eye surgery, all
under one roof.

The Freedom of Laser Eye Surgery
For many patients, laser vision correction is the best way to
correct their vision. Laser eye surgery eliminates the hassles of
eyewear or contact lenses, can help you be eligible for a particular profession, or
help to ensure safety on the job. Whatever your reason for
considering laser eye surgery, at VisionMed you can expect highly
experienced surgeons, the latest technology, and exceptional care -
all at an affordable price. Open your eyes to the freedom laser eye
surgery can deliver!Laser
Procedures
PlanoScan©
PlanoScan©
laser vision correction is recommended for patients with a mild
prescription who want a cost effective solution to their vision
problems. There are two different
PlanoScan©
procedures: PRK and LASIK. With
PlanoScan©
PRK surgery the top layer (called the epithelium) of the cornea is
removed. The surgeon then uses the excimer laser to reshape the
exposed cornea tissue. Once this is complete the surgeon will apply
eye drops and a bandage contact lens to start the healing process.
This option is for patients with corneas that are too thin for LASIK.
The
PlanoScan© LASIK procedure begins with the creation of a corneal flap.
The flap is immediately folded back to reveal the middle layer of
the cornea, which is then reshaped by the laser. Once this is done,
the flap is repositioned and natural forces hold it in place until
surface healing is complete. Both
PlanoScan©
procedures are recommended for patients with mild prescriptions of
myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism.
Wavefront
Scan®
Patients at risk for low light and night vision problems usually
have moderate prescriptions, large pupils, and corneal shape
irregularities. These conditions can cause higher order aberrations
that contribute to low-light vision problems such as glare, halos
and shadows. If you have one or all of these conditions, your doctor
might recommend the
Wavefront
Scan®
procedure, which uses high-resolution laser technology to avoid
night vision problems. The high-resolution laser can scan a complex
pattern that does not induce high order aberrations during the laser
vision correction procedure.
Wavefront
Scan®
surgery
offers you freedom from glasses and contact lenses, and
freedom from low light and night vision problems. It addresses
problems that conventional
PlanoScan©
procedures
cannot address.
CustomScan©
Patients with severe to extreme prescriptions and/or severe levels
of pre-existing higher order aberrations require a laser system that
goes beyond wavefront technology. At the forefront of this new
technology is a sophisticated measuring device called a
topolyzer, a tool which generates a three dimensional image of your
eye. The next step uses computer imaging software to reconfigure the
three-dimensional corneal image and correct for both lower and
higher order aberrations. The new configuration is used as a guide
by a high-resolution excimer laser system to selectively reprofile
the corneal surface. The CustomScan© procedure enables an
optimal, eye specific correction that can only be attained with a
high-resolution excimer laser system that creates a customized
pattern on each eye.

VisionMed patients generally resume their normal activities within
days after the procedure. Once corrected, your vision should remain
stable. Many of our patients enjoy 20/20 vision or better.
You must be 18 years of age and meet certain medical criteria.
